About the circuit

The Shanghai International Circuit is a modern masterpiece, designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke, and has hosted the Chinese Grand Prix since its debut in 2004. Located in the Jiading District, about 35 kilometres from downtown Shanghai, the track is easily accessible via public transport, particularly Metro Line 11.

The circuit features a 5.451 km layout with 16 turns, blending technical sections and high-speed straights. Its most iconic feature is the snail-shaped Turns 1 and 2, which spiral downwards into a tight corner, challenging drivers with varying lines and braking points. The 1.2 km back straight, one of the longest in F1, leads to heavy braking into Turn 14, a key overtaking spot.

Designed with fan experience in mind, the circuit boasts impressive facilities, including vast grandstands with panoramic views and plenty of food and entertainment options. Its layout reflects traditional Chinese symbols, including the "shàng" (上) character, representing "above" or "up." This fusion of modern design and cultural significance makes the Shanghai circuit a standout venue on the F1 calendar.
